Eight schools upgraded across Shaker Heights District

Gilbane provided construction management services for various projects across the Shaker Heights City School District to upgrade facilities in eight district buildings. All eight buildings received some form of infrastructure improvement. In addition, Gilbane restored Fernway Elementary School, which was damaged in a catastrophic fire.

Project Overview

  • Key upgrades to the building envelopes included exterior masonry restoration, below-grade waterproofing, exterior painting, cornice repairs, roof repairs, and partial roof replacements
  • The waterproofing scope included rebuilding below/above grade stairwells, rebuilding area wells, hand/guard rail improvements, installing new footer drains, new downspouts, upgrades to the storm system, and landscape restoration
  • The most complicated of the eight buildings was the addition and restoration of Fernway Elementary School, which was damaged by a catastrophic fire
  • The restored Fernway Elementary School is now the first “new” school building for the district in 63 years
  • New spaces include a state-of-the-art reading room with makerspace and a new café

Overall, the team achieved 38% participation from diverse firms, 60% of the firms were local to the Shaker Heights neighborhood and located within 10 miles of the community. Gilbane also awarded a portion of the construction management services to a minority mentor protégé firm.
