Breathing new life into five 1930s residence halls
Gilbane provided design-build services for extensive renovations to the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle (a.k.a. The Quad), comprised of five halls: Baldwin, Crandall, Frazier, Truth, and Wheatley Halls on the Howard University campus.
Project Overview
- Renovation and modernization of five, five-story dormitory buildings
- Constructed a covered corridor to connect all five buildings
- Updates focused extensively on infrastructure improvements, upgraded finishes throughout, communal restrooms, brand new building connectors, additional elevators, and modernization of the existing elevators, site work, and recreational/lounge space upgrades
- The project achieved 42% CBE participation, exceeding its 35% goal
- The project contributed to Howard University’s mission to provide, new student life facilities, preserve university capital, and include diverse project participation
The project team donated over seven boxes of abandoned books, worth upwards of $3,500, to the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC!
