Cleveland Park Library

First design-build public library in Washington, D.C. to be built from the ground up

Utilizing a design-build approach, Gilbane collaborated with Perkins Eastman DC and the District of Columbia Public Library system (DCPL) to replace the existing Cleveland Park Library library on Macomb and Connecticut Avenues in Washington, DC. The new library provides a positive and unique experience inside, with plenty of light from double-volume windows and quiet alcoves for reading. The building’s façade pulls from the vibrant urban culture of its surrounding community, blending seamlessly into the neighborhood.

Project Overview

  • The building’s design takes cultural queues from the surrounding neighborhood, blending with the urban fabric
  • Careful coordination of demolition activities with WMATA to protect shafts from dust, debris and vibration
  • A completely online check-out system is stationed at the entrance for patrons that prefer to come in quickly and pick up their books placed on hold without standing in line
  • Conference rooms are abundantly placed throughout the building, offering community groups, students and others quiet spaces for meetings of all sizes

“The new Cleveland Park Library is at once bold and iconic yet deeply respectful of the neighborhood’s historic architecture. The flexible design, natural light and inspiring spaces will ensure its relevance for generations to come.”
