Leveraging Data Analytics to Drive Innovation in Safety

February 15, 2022

The primary objective of Gilbane Cares is to send all employees and subcontractors home safe every day. We’ve made safety our top priority by collecting data over the past 20 years to help inform our daily safety practices. We leverage a wealth of information from our own data collection and outside tools, to reduce and prevent incidents by influencing jobsite behavior.

Data Collection

Gilbane collects data from various sources, including CMIC, Predictive Solutions, Smartapp, Procore, and RiskConnect, among others. In addition to providing work hours, the essential quantifiable data element, each tool provides unique metrics that together form an overall project picture. For example, claims data from RiskConnect puts a dollar value to incidents, showing how safety impacts financial performance. And because of a field request, Gilbane will be adding OSHA inspections to our list of data sources in 2022.

Gilbane recognized early that standardization and consolidation of analytics were crucial to identify trends and predict outcomes. From data analysis, we can establish safety trends that provide us insight into improving day-to-day job site activities.  For instance, one trend is that many incidents occur early in the morning, is it lack of stretch and flex? Or lack of supervision due to meetings? The data can tell us that if we look.  Project by project, identifiable data trends like this help Gilbane develop actionable dashboards and reports.  Trends allow actionable KPIs to be established leading to improved safety and productivity by highlighting patterns of inefficiencies that introduce risk.

Informative Decision Making

To influence project-specific decision making, our team regularly runs reports with variables such as geography, job function, people, or outside influences like weather. With these job filters, Gilbane can identify trends and determine root causes to make educated jobsite decisions.

Safety analytics have a significant impact on Gilbane subcontractor selection. Contractor loss history and number of incidents are important factors that can impact job schedule, budget, and overall safety. Evaluating this subcontractor data makes it clear that price is not the only factor in overall job cost, as a lack of a safety culture has a financial impact. The data also allows us to reward good practices.

Analytic-Driven Outcomes

Once the data is evaluated, Gilbane’s job is to develop an action plan to mitigate risk. Leveraging data, Gilbane can anticipate incidents before they occur, giving us the ability to adjust safety policies, permitting and estimates in response to changes in the field. By utilizing Gilbane’s intellectual property, we have the collective power to reduce risk and increase performance.

Through Gilbane Building Company’s progressive safety programs and techniques, we continuously raise the bar by applying innovative processes, checks and balances and the latest technology. Our commitment to the procurement of analytics places Gilbane in a unique position to be the leader in preventing, predicting and reducing claims; therefore, influencing jobsite behavior and sending everyone home safe at the end of the day.
