Helping Healthcare Systems Respond

Our Jacksonville office procured tents and cones to help construct a drive-through testing facility for Ascension Medical Group St. Vincent’s.
Supporting our Healthcare Workers
Our Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) teams across the country have been using 3D printers at home and in the office to produce non-sterile face shields and ear guards for local healthcare workers. They’ve made over 500 to date.
The New York City office donated masks to our client, Mount Sinai Health System. The team also worked with Mount Sinai to bring 10 unused bed floors back into operation as part of the hospital system’s response to the virus. In Boston and Providence, those offices donated 2,000 safety glasses to multiple organizations in their local communities:
- 500 to Massachusetts General Hospital
- 500 to Dana Farber Cancer Institute
- 500 to the City of Worcester
- 500 safety glasses to Care New England hospitals
Michelle Masse, Global Sales and Marketing Specialist in our Sarasota, Florida office, recently went through cancer treatments (and now has a compromised immune system), so recognizes safety and health is very important during this pandemic. “I whipped out my sewing machine I have had stored for 20 years and decided to make face coverings/masks to share with my fellow employees. I enjoyed creating these and giving back.”
Sr. Human Resources Business Partner, Melissa Phillips, shared that her 
daughters Payton, Abby and Taylor (shown right) are sewing masks to donate to a local nursing home and a cancer hospital ICU in Texas.
Don Conover, director, Gilbane FMS, shared that his wife, an owner of a quilt shop that had closed due to the pandemic, donated her time and materials to sew 700 masks for the Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in New York.
Caring for Our Communities and Employees
The New York Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) have organized a “Virtual Food Drive” encouraging donations to charities, including The Food Bank of NYC, City Harvest, and the New York Common Pantry.
Melissa Drew, Project Executive for UMES School of Pharmacy, answered the call to donate blood.
Company wide, we have established a Paid Time Off (PTO) donation program creating a voluntary pool of donated PTO to be used specifically for employees impacted by the pandemic. So far $700,000 worth of hours have been donated!
To get ahead of the situation, a team of leaders at Gilbane began monitoring the situation daily in late February to make sure we are taking the right precautions on behalf of employees and the company. Taking guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government agencies, as well as best practices from other corporate enterprises, we update a FAQ document regularly for the latest information as it pertains to Gilbane. We also opened a Coronavirus hotline number for employees that they can call if they’ve been diagnosed or placed in quarantine due to virus exposure. To date, over 500 inquiries for guidance and assistance have come through the hotline.
On our projects and in our communities, we are working to help those around us. We are grateful to the healthcare and front line workers for their bravery and commitment. And extremely proud of our team for their passion and ingenuity. Together, we are stronger and more resilient.
