Building a Diverse Workforce

November 29, 2022

One of the pillars of Gilbane’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) commitment is to achieve greater workforce diversity through recruitment and retention. Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) have been instrumental in partnering with our Talent Acquisition team to help drive this commitment through knowledge-sharing and by representing Gilbane at various recruiting events across the nation. Earlier this month, Gilbane’s Hispanic ERG, HOL@, partnered with Talent Acquisition to attend the SHPE National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. SHPE, which stands for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, hosts the largest gathering of Hispanic professionals and students in the U.S. looking for opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM field.

Diversifying the Talent Pipeline

At the SHPE Convention, Gilbane hosted a career booth to connect with potential candidates face-to-face. Gilbane employees from across the country joined together with the single goal of recruiting some of the industry’s brightest candidates to fill open positions at Gilbane. The convention included two full days of interviewing and connecting with potential candidates. Gilbane’s recruitment team consisted of both human resources and operations members from across the country: Ana Fonseca (Texas), Jenna Knight (Rhode Island), Cindy Roque (New York), Jonathan Reyes (New York), Leonardo Torres (Ohio) Maria Valencia (NY), Santiago Mejia (MD), Angela Ramirez ( and Rudaina Hussain-Tzimbal (CA).

Gilbane’s Hispanic ERG, HOL@, partnered with the Talent Acquisition team to plan out our attendance at the convention, which involved reviewing hundreds of resumes, scheduling virtual interviews, and scheduling onsite/in-person interviews at the convention itself. As a result, over 40 highly motivated candidates were interviewed, and the team had the opportunity to connect with over 150 interested students and professionals through Gilbane’s career booth. The Gilbane team left the convention feeling inspired and energized because of the drive and motivation displayed by the next generation of builders. Having the opportunity to recommend diverse candidates for hire across different business units showed the team just how valuable it was to attend the SHPE Convention. In addition to meeting new people, the Gilbane team members had the opportunity to connect and spend time with one another.

Building an Inclusive Culture

Gilbane’s Hispanic ERG, HOL@ recently held a virtual summit comprised of chapter leaders from across the company. The leaders shared activities that took place in their local chapters this year, participated in a team building activity, and brainstormed initiatives for the new year. An initiative discussed, and set to be a 2023 goal, is an HOL@ mentorship program. The goal of the program is to enrich the lives and careers of team members through the sharing of diverse perspectives across the HOL@ community at Gilbane. The program is in development across other ERGs, with a couple officially launching this past year, and support Gilbane’s values related to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive culture for all team members. As leaders of an ERG at Gilbane, we have the opportunity to develop members professionally and personally. Through this program we aim to make all participants feel comfortable as part of the Gilbane community, knowing they can build a successful career while feeling supported and brining their best selves to work.
