DC Public Schools John Lewis Elementary School
First Net Zero Energy school named after civil rights legend
Gilbane and Perkins Eastman modernized the existing 1970s school (formerly West Elementary), creating a 21st-century learning environment and high-performance building in Ward 4. The modernization demolished the existing facility and rebuilt a new 94,000 SF school on the property to meet Net Zero Energy and WELL Building Standards. Renamed after civil rights legend John Lewis, the new school offers a welcoming, interactive learning environment that aims to spark creativity and inspire a place for “good trouble.”
Project Overview
- First Net Zero Energy school in the District
- Classrooms on each level feature retractable doors that open to a shared learning commons for easy collaboration or remain closed for heads-down focus
- Treehouse-themed library inspired by Rock Creek Park features built-in reading nooks and an elevated makerspace overlooking the library
- New playgrounds and an outdoor amphitheater
The Department of General Services is particularly excited about this property because it is an example of how building design can harness energy and sustainability elements creating a Net Zero Energy-Ready facility. The West/John Lewis Elementary School is outfitted and ready to generate an equal amount of energy that it uses, saving the District in energy costs.
