DDC COVID-19 Centers of Excellence Program
Rapid response delivery of three COVID-19 hospitals serving communities in NY
To aid the City in responding to the COVID-19 threat, the New York City Department of Design & Construction (DDC) hired Gilbane to provide construction services for three Centers of Excellence facilities leased by New York City Health + Hospitals (NYC H+H). These first-of-a-kind health centers provide comprehensive outpatient primary care services to COVID-19 survivors. The project team and trade contractors worked around the clock during the pandemic to put an unprecedented amount of work in place at an accelerated rate.
Project Overview
- Locations selected by NYC H+H were targeted to serve disadvantaged communities in Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens
- A design-build approach was utilized on site and Gilbane, trade contractors, NYC DDC, NYC H+H and the design team collocated during the pandemic to help meet the fast-track schedules
- Scope included infrastructure work, structural rehabilitation, and interior fit-out for services such as miscellaneous examinations, maternity, dental, and modalities including X-ray, bone density, CT, and MRI
