Leveraging Military Experience to Benefit Federal Partners

Gilbane’s long history of performing work for the Federal government dates to the early days of World War II, when we constructed facilities for the U.S. Navy in Newport, Rhode Island. We built the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the World War II Memorial, and in 2010 acquired a small business that specialized in Federal work. “Over the past decade, Gilbane has become a respected leader in the Federal marketplace, having completed more than $2 billion of Federal work,” says Mike Roth, Senior Client Account Executive and U.S. Navy veteran. He continued: “Much of our success performing Federal work is a direct result of our ability to recruit and hire a cadre of highly experienced military veterans.”

One of our newest veteran hires is Rob Clark, a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who most recently served as Commander of the Wilmington (NC) District. Rob’s new role with Gilbane is Senior Client Account Executive for Federal Programs. Rob shares how his military experience provides Gilbane with an edge in the pursuit and execution of Federal work: “As a recent military retiree, I am excited to apply my 25 years of military experience to pursue new work for Gilbane, and  also support our operations staff to help them better understand the Army’s unique needs and requirements. It’s an honor to join the Gilbane family and was an easy transition from the Army Corps of Engineers sharing likeminded values: Integrity, Teamwork, Toughmindedness, Loyalty, Discipline, Caring, Entrepreneurship, and Dedication to Excellence. Together, I look forward to providing efficient, cost effective, and safe solutions to some of the most challenging Federal construction projects.”

Other Gilbane military veterans directly apply the technical experience they gained in the military to civilian projects. Jerry Grose served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialist in the U.S. Army, and as a Gilbane Unexploded Ordnance Manager, he continues to investigate and remove munitions to make sites safe. “The discipline and highly specialized skills I learned in the military to safely remove explosives are directly applicable to the work I perform as a civilian,” says Jerry, “and have significantly contributed to Gilbane’s excellent record of safe performance in what is an inherently hazardous work environment.”

Mike, Rob, and Jerry are among a group of many amazing veterans who help us successfully win and deliver projects every day. The knowledge, experience, and values they bring from their time in the military are key contributors to our success in safely and successfully performing hundreds of projects for the Federal government.
