Brian explains, “In design, VR mock-ups can help clients and end-users ‘walk through’ healthcare spaces before anything is built. This can visually illustrate potential issues and design opportunities that may not be obvious on a two-dimensional plan.” During the presentation, Brian demonstrated a VR mock-up of a patient room created for a large healthcare facility project Gilbane is currently building.
Brian also discussed the Gartner Hype Cycle, which illustrates the evolution of how technology and its applications are adapted and used in real world settings. Both virtual reality and augmented reality are still fairly new in the technology lifecycle, but have already begun to transform the way clients, designers and contractors can experience a project, which provide a number of advantages.
The benefits of using VR and AR technology in construction are plentiful, including its application with laser scanning to assist with the coordination of equipment, and using VR for overall layout, coordination and verification of design elements. Gilbane’s in-house Media Studio is currently partnering with the American Society of Health Care Engineering (ASHE) to develop VR as a training tool for ASHE certification. Brian explains, “By showing rather than giving them something to read or lecturing them about it, we are giving workers a more impactful way to learn before any construction begins.” The possible applications of these tools are as limitless as your imagination.
One final note Brian had for the attendees addressed best practices when introducing advanced VR/AR technology to clients. “The client’s focus should be on the content, and not on how to control the technology.” He added, “It’s important to develop the simplest interface, control and navigation while providing training support to users to ensure the technology doesn’t overshadow the reasoning behind using it.”
