We believe Gilbane is a vibrant company because we invest in our people and promote inclusion and diversity in support of developing a stronger organization and community. Hiring practices and talent attraction are essential to continue building diversity within our workforce. Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) have been instrumental in partnering with our Talent Acquisition team to help drive this commitment through knowledge-sharing and representing Gilbane at various national recruiting events. Earlier this month, Gilbane’s Hispanic ERG, HOL@, partnered with the Talent Acquisition team to attend the SHPE National Convention in Salt Lake City, UT. SHPE, which stands for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, serves as the country’s largest annual gathering of Hispanic STEM students and professionals. The convention brings together over 9,000 of the brightest Hispanic scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to celebrate, enhance skills, and network.

Driving Inclusive Hiring

Gilbane sponsored the 2023 SHPE National Convention and hosted a career booth for the fourth year to network with prospective talent. Gilbane employees from various functions across the country joined to recruit some of the industry’s brightest candidates to fill open positions . The convention included educational workshops, inspiring keynote speeches, competitions, networking events, and two full days of interviewing and connecting with potential candidates. As a result, the Gilbane team extended 16 on-the-spot internship offers and two full-time hire offers. The on-the-spot offers, which set this year’s participation apart from the others, demonstrate Gilbane’s commitment to diversifying the talent pipeline.

Recommending prospective hires for different regions and positions was a valuable experience for the Gilbane team who attended SHPE. They left the convention feeling inspired and energized by the next generation of builders. In addition to meeting new people, the Gilbane team had the opportunity to connect and bond with one another. For our team, the SHPE Convention is more than a recruiting opportunity; it’s a celebration of the Hispanic community shaping the future of construction management.

Gilbane’s recruitment team included Leonardo Torres (OH), Dalila Ricci (NY), Bernadette Kurpiewski (CA), Raquel Diaz (NY), Mariella Ochoa (IL), Jose Jimenez (PA), Margarita Castro Pereira (NY), Mauricio Velazquez Rodriguez (MD), Saige Zaborsky (CO), and Alisha Johnson (TX).
