Doug Pitcock ’49 Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center
Delivering an award-winning Hotel and Conference Center on the Texas A&M University campus in time for the first home football game of the fall season
The Texas A&M University campus community needed a venue that could accommodate students, parents, and Aggie football fans, providing a place for celebrations, meetings, and conferences on campus.
Through a public-private partnership (P3) delivery, Gilbane provided oversight on design and development and was responsible for constructing a new 250-room hotel with a 35,000 SF conference center directly adjacent to Kyle Field on the University campus.
The first-class, upscale, eight-level Hotel & Conference Center consists of a two-level podium containing the conference center and ballroom. The corner of the hotel at Wellborn Rd. and Joe Routt Blvd. is anchored by a glass and brick tower which includes a full-service restaurant and adjoining 12th Man Lounge at street and terrace levels. The upper six floors house 250 hotel guest rooms/suites with amenities including a welcoming lobby entrance, fitness center, business center, and a third-floor exterior amenity level with a swimming pool featuring Texas A&M University’s logo.
The project, located in the heart of campus, was a focal project within the town of College Station during construction and upon completion. The AAA Four Diamond-rated hotel offers the University another location to host various Department banquets, conferences, career fairs, and other events. Students and visitors can visit the hotel bistro for a grab-and-go meal, grab a full meal at the restaurant, or use the space to study or visit with friends. The hotel also provides a place to stay for parents, families, former students, and other visitors who may come to Aggieland in the fall for a football game or throughout the rest of the year. Many of the hotel staff are student workers interested in a career in the hospitality industry.
Throughout the project, Gilbane hired numerous student interns from the Department of Construction Science and provided them with exposure to real-world construction experience. Several of these interns have since graduated and now work for Gilbane full-time, while many others went on to work for other construction companies.
