Saipan and Rota Airport Inspection Facilities, CNMI

Federal team delivers international airport project in Saipan and Rota Airports, Northern Mariana Islands

Gilbane’s collaborative project team incorporated input from numerous stakeholders to produce a cost-effective, buildable design that accounted for the CNMI’s remote location and available resources. Weekly coordination calls were held with U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the CBP during the design to resolve outstanding issues and minimize rework during construction. Gilbane achieved a $2 million cost savings for the Government by using available space within the primary arrival area for the placement of an administration section instead of building an additional structure.

Project Overview

  • Design-build renovation
  • 16,000-SF of existing inspection facilities at Saipan and Rota International Airports
  • Met DHS and CBP, and ICE design and security standards
  • Work was phased to allow full operation of the airports during renovation, including maintaining passenger access and traffic flow and all utilities
  • Coordinated with the Commonwealth Port Authority (CPA) to work around flight schedules, executing demolition during off-peak hours to minimize disruptions

Quick Stats

“Gilbane’s project manager, construction quality control managers, and superintendents were extremely cooperative and easy to work with and had good ideas to solve construction problems. Gilbane was dedicated to meeting contract requirements that had to be performed on these remote islands.”
