Adlai E. Stevenson High School District 125

Long-term partnership with sustainable school focused on innovation and environmental learning

Gilbane has been a proud construction partner on the Stevenson campus for over 30 years, including the most recent projects of the two-phased East Building addition. Phase 1 included a new 56,000-SF, four-story building that was constructed to provide additional learning and teaching spaces. The LEED® Platinum certified, Net Zero Energy building includes new classrooms, labs, greenhouse, green roofs to be used for teaching spaces and stormwater control. The 146,000-SF East Building Addition Phase II project included expanding and upgrading the school’s field house facility with updated athletic equipment, flooring and MEPFP.

Gilbane also built a fitness center addition and student services renovation tied into the expansion and existing school building, which includes locker room/training facilities, classroom space and a fitness mezzanine.

Project Overview

  • Addition achieved LEED® Platinum and received Living Architecture Performance Certification
  • The all-electric building is powered by a 500KW solar panel array on the roof of the existing building
  • More than 78% of the construction waste generated during the project was recycled
  • Large active green wall, rooftop greenhouse, and exterior gardens supporting innovative learning in biology and botany with students producing food to demonstrate a farm-to-fork approach

“In the end, the project was a huge success! Our residents near the construction site love the new building, but were very complimentary with how little noise and dust affected their homes. The faculty and staff didn’t have a single complaint about noise, dust, or temperature. The students were amazed with the entire process as they were able to follow the progress looking through windows and timelapse photography…It is Gilbane’s leadership in regards to sustainability, risk mitigation, scheduling, quality, and cost that made this project a success. It is also the exact customer service I’ve grown to expect from Gilbane.”
