Gilbane Building Company and the City of Orlando Celebrate Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center Opening
Orlando, FL –May 3, 2022 Gilbane Building Company recently completed the renovation and expansion of the new Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center for the City of Orlando. Gilbane partnered with Borrelli + Partners and JCB Construction to provide design-build services to expand and renovate an existing 1926 Mediterranean Revival architecture building that originally served the community as a school. In 1995, the building was designated as a historic landmark.
“It was an honor partnering with the City of Orlando, Borrelli + Partners, and JCB Construction to deliver a project that will help serve as a treasured community resource for years to come,” says Shane Burnsed, Area Manager of Gilbane Building Company. “Our team was proud to expand and renovate this historic landmark building, giving it new life and purpose. This building will be an exceptional amenity and service to the City and specifically, the communities of Holden Heights and Parramore.”
The facility has been repurposed as a neighborhood community center and houses the services provided by the City’s Downtown Recreation Complex. The project includes 22,500 SF of historic building renovations and 34,600 SF of new construction with an addition of a 672-seat gymnasium, art studio, pottery studio, learning spaces, and renovated auditorium space with a 156-seat capacity, kitchen/cafeteria, and offices as well as playgrounds and other outdoor amenities.
“We’re excited to have the historic Grand Avenue Elementary School redeveloped into a beautiful neighborhood center and once again serving our young residents and surrounding community,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “This facility will be home to our newly expanded Orlando Pottery Studio and provide a vibrant place for youth programming, community gatherings and more.”
