Demolition is underway on the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in Hunts Point community to make way for a new affordable housing development.

The Peninsula, a five-acre, mixed-use development, will deliver 740 units of 100 percent affordable housing, 52,000 s/f of open space, 50,000 s/f of industrial space, 20,000 s/f of commercial space, and over 50,000 s/f of community facility space.

The development is expected to create nearly 1,000 construction jobs and over 300 permanent jobs. “This demolition ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Mothers on the Move and others in the Hunts Pont community who successfully campaigned to close the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center and helped create a new vision for the site,” said Gilbane Development Company chairman and founder Bob Gilbane.
