The Ultimate Fall Recruiting Checklist

July 18, 2023
David Crosby
Planning for Fall recruitment is well underway at Gilbane. Gilbane’s team is gearing up for the busiest recruiting season when most students are beginning the exciting search for where they want to begin their careers. We are thrilled to have representatives on-site at multiple national conventions and college fairs later this year, and we are looking forward to meeting students, alumni, and/or military members looking to transition out of the military. If you are preparing for career planning and plan to job search this fall, here are some tips on how to engage with companies this recruiting season.

How to Prepare

  • Do some pre-work: Research the companies you want to meet with. For Gilbane, understanding our mission, our values, and our history is important to us. Most of this information is available on the company’s website and their social media accounts.
  • Be authentic: We want to know you!
  • Have a current resume: Be prepared to talk about your experiences and accomplishments.
  • Dress properly: Business casual is encouraged.
  • Be curious: Come with questions, not only about the company but about the people you are meeting as well. This is a great way to get a sense of who we are and what we do.
  • Be prepared to solve problems: On-the-spot interviews are always a possibility. Keep in mind that the “right” answer isn’t important here, your approach and how you arrived at the solution is key.
    • Think STAR
      • Situation: What was the problem/issue
      • Task: Describe what your role/responsibility
      • Action: Explain, in detail, what steps you took to address it
      • Result: What were the outcomes of the action
  • Be able to answer “The Why”: Why do you want to be in construction?  Why do you want to work for Gilbane?

Looking Ahead

Gilbane will also be attending, and supporting, teams competing in The Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 6 & 7 student competition being held in February 2024 in Sparks, Nevada. ASC is a professional association that supports the development and advancement of construction education. The organization promotes knowledge-sharing, and guides and promotes excellence in curricula through teaching, research, and service. The student competition has many categories representing various sectors of the construction industry. Each team will compete against each other based upon a construction company sponsor problem affecting real construction projects. The students will be given a set amount of time to perform various industry tasks, including scheduling, estimating, site utilization, safety, contract negotiation, and more. We are especially excited about this event because it allows firms like Gilbane to directly interact with students to identify solutions for industry-related challenges.
