This advanced clinical care treatment modality is revolutionizing cancer care world-wide. Most of the new facilities involve single room solutions as stand-alone or additions and the new construction demands a highly experienced construction firm that understands and has overcome the challenges of this type of specialized construction planning and execution. Coordination of the mass concrete requirements for shielding with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) infrastructure is a complicated task and must be planned well in advance of site activities to make the construction process go smoothly.
An emerging trend: single room treatment installations
In response to the physical and financial constraints confronting the construction of multi-room treatment centers, innovation in smaller, more compact accelerators, is making proton therapy available in single treatment room installations for a fraction of the cost of a multi-room option.
Single-room solutions provide similar services to a multi-room layout at a reduced cost and can be added to an existing facility to expand treatment modality options. This economical option provides an opportunity for smaller healthcare facilities to incorporate technologically-advanced cancer treatment equipment into their facility with less impact to ongoing operations. Gilbane’s proton therapy facility expertise includes the planning and construction of new treatment facilities, as well as additions and modernizations to existing facilities.
In July Gilbane project manager Ryan Snow presented alongside Teckton Architecture’s Todd Whitehead, AIA on “Solutions for Construction Challenges When Building a Proton Center” where they introduce a single room solution case study:
