Gilbane Cares: Nothing Hits the Ground

January 31, 2023
Donald Naber
For more than 150 years, Gilbane has been committed to the safety of others. Our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment for all has strengthened over the years, and we are proud of how our safety practices continually evolve. Gilbane leadership enforces the belief that whether in the field or office setting, there are no operations important enough to allow for unacceptable hazards to personnel, clients, visitors, property, and the communities in which we work.

Our industry is associated with high-hazard activities with significant risks that can only be reduced by strategically putting into place proper controls and procedures. “Nothing Hits the Ground” is a concept focused on the importance of up-front work planning controls and strict adherence to the standards set in place through owner contract negotiations, subcontractor bid documents, and buyout that are reinforced by project leadership from the start of all projects. Gilbane’s leadership expect that we work as a team to ensure “Nothing Hits the Ground.”

Nothing Hits the Ground width=

“Nothing Hits the Ground” philosophy is about more than just physical controls; it requires the entire process – sales, estimating, purchasing, safety, project management, accounting, risk management, technology – moving in the same direction through:

  1. Planning
  2. Communication
  3. Teamwork
  4. Toughmindedness
  5. Providing a safe project/work environment
  6. Setting a schedule that can be productive and successful
  7. Identifying and controlling risk
  8. Delivering projects that we can all be proud of
  9. Everyone doing their part to ensure NOTHING HITS THE GROUND

Focus in 2023

width=Every year we focus on the most impactful items in preventing injuries. Our focus in 2023 is specific to aligning with a “Nothing Hits the Ground” framework. More than half of Gilbane incidents and insurance claims are the result of exposures/risks that arise from items on the ground.  Whether it is a slip, trip, or fall, a struck by, a strain/sprain from lifting, pushing, pulling, etc., the incident/claim arose from something on the ground that could have been prevented if managed properly.

We all need to be responsible and accountable for “Nothing Hits the Ground” to ensure safer and more productive projects. Successfully adhering to the “Nothing Hits the Ground” guidelines will yield a higher quality product, enhance client, and subcontractor relationships.
