(Richmond, VA) – Gilbane Development Company will begin redevelopment of three contiguous parcels directly across the street from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center, with plans to transform the vacant industrial site into a vibrant, mixed-use environment, revitalize the W. Marshall Street corridor and create a “gateway” to the Carver community.

The project will include restoration of the 1920’s Hajoca Building, plus two wings of new construction, and will feature 136 Studio, 1BR, 2BR, 3BR, and 4BR units comprising 406 total bedrooms. It will also feature 199 garage parking spaces, indoor racks for 170 bikes, and a rooftop terrace. The building will be designed with a “U” shaped foot print on the residential floors allowing every unit to enjoy natural light and creating two distinct first floor level “courtyards” which will be used as gathering places for socializing, relaxing, and studying.

Common area and apartment amenities will be similar to those at Gilbane’s 8 ½ Canal Street project, which opened in August of 2011. These amenities include a fully-equipped fitness center, blazing fast internet, video gaming center, and computer center, as well as flat screen TVs, kitchen appliances, and washer/dryer in every unit (all of which will be fully furnished). A robust property management and residence life program will also be implemented.

Gilbane Development expects to break ground in March, and is targeting an August 2013 completion to accept students for the start of the 2013-2014 academic year.
