Gilbane Building Company has been selected by Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) to provide construction management at-risk services for the new Alexandria City High School at Minnie Howard, which will accommodate approximately 1,600 students. This project aims to shape ACPS into a better, more equitable and richer learning environment for thousands of young people.

Designed by Perkins Eastman as an innovative and energy-efficient learning environment, the new school, for students in grades 9 through 12, will feature five levels arranged like a pinwheel. The pinwheel concept organizes learning neighborhoods and athletic facilities around the heart of the school. The existing school will remain operational while the new building is constructed on the site of the Minnie Howard Campus. A key component of Gilbane’s selection was our local Net-Zero experience at Falls Church City Public Schools’ Meridian High School, Arlington Public Schools’ Cardinal Elementary School and D.C. Public Schools’ (DCPS) West Elementary School, as well as our history of success with Perkins Eastman on projects like DCPS’ Ron Brown College Preparatory High School and Dunbar Senior High School.

“Gilbane is committed to ACPS’ mission to ensure success by inspiring students and addressing barriers to learning,” said Matt Sarver, vice president and Washington, DC business unit leader for Gilbane. “We plan to leverage our experience as the leading K-12 builder in the country and own commitment to inclusion and diversity to provide opportunities for students and the community to engage with the project during construction.”

Gilbane is committed to engaging and enriching the communities in which we live and build. As part of this commitment, we pursue woman-owned, minority-owned, veteran-owned, and small business participation on all our projects – regardless of funding requirements. Outreach strategies are currently underway to engage the greater Alexandria community.

The new Alexandria City High School at Minnie Howard is slated for completion by the end of 2024.
