Project Overview

  • The project was completed on-time and within budget and achieved 29% SWaM participation, which exceeded the Commonwealth’s 20% requirement
  • The Virginia Capitol’s original structure was designed by Thomas Jefferson, with foundations dating back to 1785
  • It is the oldest continuously used Capitol in the United States
  • The project included installation of new roofing, gutter and skylight systems and a 27,000-SF underground Visitor’s Center that supports the renovation of the Capitol Building and the future needs within Capitol Square

The Virginia Capitol is the oldest continually used Capitol in the United States. It received its National Landmark designation in 1960 and received National Register of Historic Places listing in 1969.
