Gilbane provided preconstruction and construction management services for the 107,700 SF Mechanical Engineering Building at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, transforming the facility into a modern hub for education, innovation, and collaboration. The project combined a major renovation with a strategic addition to enhance life safety, accessibility, and learning environments while supporting the university’s sustainability and equity goals.
Project Overview
- Delivered a comprehensive renovation of the existing 66,000 SF Mechanical Engineering Building, reimagined for modern instruction, research, and community use
- Constructed the 42,000 SF Sidney Lu Center for Learning and Innovation, featuring a new elevator and enclosed fire stair to improve accessibility and life safety
- Upgraded all major building systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and advanced AV and technology infrastructure
- Created state-of-the-art classrooms, offices, and support spaces designed for interdisciplinary learning and collaboration
- Achieved high-performance sustainability goals while meeting diversity participation commitments
