The Ion
Historic structure transforms into a state-of-the-art innovation hub
Gilbane partnered with development manager, Hines, for general contracting services on Rice University’s Ion Project. This historic renovation transformed a Sears, Roebuck & Company building that was built in 1939 into an “innovation hub” which consists of co-working space, event space, academic space (classrooms and lecture rooms) restaurant and entertainment amenities.
Project Overview
- The Ion is the centerpiece of an up-and-coming innovation district, bringing area entrepreneurs, corporate and academic communities together
- Signature elements of its original art deco design were preserved
- A new central skylight showers the building in natural sunlight and provides unobstructed views across the ground floor
Working with the architect and our subcontractors, the team was able to find workable solutions to save the project $5 million while maintaining the project’s architectural intent.
