Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, The Mater Center

New student life center transforms the heart of campus

Gilbane and Hord Coplan Macht partnered on The Mater Center addition for the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart located in Bethesda, Maryland. The new student life center consisted of the design and construction of a two-story, approximately 54,000-SF student life center at the heart of the existing campus along the new Campus Walk. The Mater Center is outfitted with a commercial kitchen with the capability of providing a broader range of dining options to students along with more inviting spaces for dining and gathering. This project includes a state-of-the-art 420-seat theater for musical, dance, and theatrical productions and lectures, assemblies, and classes. The second-floor houses classrooms for choral, orchestra, band classes, and practice rooms. The visual arts program now has studios for 3D and 2D art, as well as a photography lab and darkroom.

Project Overview

Stone Ridge School of the Scared Heart is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for girls, grades 1-12, with a co-educational early childhood program.
The new building serves as the heart of the campus, centrally located on the Bethesda, MD campus.
Constructed in the middle of an occupied campus and Gilbane took care to keep all students, staff, and visitors safe throughout construction.

I know these summer days are intense, with every hour making a difference in meeting deadlines. I can say with great enthusiasm that these upgrades will truly transform the educational experience for every student in remarkable ways. Our students will be so inspired by these new spaces, which provide so much functionality and beauty.
