Slate School
Highly sustainable new school reflect it’s connection to nature
This nonprofit independent K-6 school is focused on nature conservancy with an inquiry-based and child-centered program to serve 70-students. Touted as one of the most environmentally friendly schools in the country, the goal of the campus is to provide a learning setting that is healthy, environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible.
Project Overview
- Slate Lower School consists of six individual academic structures, totaling approximately 6,000 SF with a courtyard as the campus focal point serving grades K-6
- The structures – four classrooms, one multipurpose space, and one library/administration space – are positioned intentionally to create outdoor learning spaces with windows and doors that open directly onto the school’s gardens, playgrounds, and open spaces
- As one of the most environmentally friendly schools in the country, The team is working toward LEED certification, and has incorporated into the design key principles from several other sustainability certifications such as WELL, Passive House, the Collaboration for High Performance Schools, and the Living Building Challenge
- Going beyond industry practice, construction materials underwent an independent inspection to ensure the highest standards of ecological and environmental of the building materials
- Gilbane began construction on Slate Upper School in 2023 to serve grades 7-12
