Milwaukee County Zoo Rhino and Humboldt Penguin Habitat Enhancements
Transforming two of Milwaukee County Zoo’s most iconic habitats
Rhino habitat revitalized 61,000 square feet of the historic 1950s Pachyderm Complex, delivering a contemporary environment designed to support advanced animal care practices. The work included a full renovation of 10 holding stalls and the unification of two separate buildings into a new enclosed viewing barn with flexible interior/exterior yard space that enables keepers to safely shift rhinos, hippos, and hoofed stock based on husbandry, behavioral, and medical needs. New viewing opportunities and an interactive learning space give guests a closer connection to these endangered animals and deepen understanding of global conservation challenges. At the Zoo’s main entrance, the expanded 10,000 SF Penguins of the Pacific habitat for Humbolt penguins significantly enriches the living environment for this sensitive species. Tripling the pool capacity to 30,000 gallons and upgrading the Life Support System improves water quality and mimics the penguins’ natural coastal conditions more closely. The habitat’s new temperature control systems ensure a consistent environment year-round, supporting the health of the colony. A large viewing window and shaded areas create a more immersive visitor experience while promoting the penguins’ comfort.
Project Overview
- The facility can now accommodate up to three adult and two juvenile Eastern black rhinos, allowing the Zoo to support future breeding efforts for this critically endangered species
- The Humboldt penguin habitat, first built in the 1980s, was modernized to create a more comfortable, environmentally stable home
- The renovated spaces create meaningful, “nose-to-nose” and “nose-to-beak” encounters and add new areas for interaction with zookeepers, behind the scenes access, and year-round viewing
- Through a strong outreach and matchmaking effort, the work substantially exceeded Milwaukee County’s Certified Small Businesses and resident hiring goals
The Milwaukee County Zoo’s habitat enhancements for Eastern black rhinos and Humboldt penguins represent a strategic investment in animal welfare, conservation education, and visitor experience. These upgrades support the Zoo’s mission to provide state-of-the-art environments where animals can thrive while offering the community more meaningful opportunities to learn about endangered species.
