Johns Hopkins University new School of Nursing improves the connection between the medical campus and the community

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Nursing has an expanded student population, driving the need for additional classrooms, research spaces, learning spaces, event spaces, and support spaces. To meet this need, Gilbane provided construction management at-risk services for the renovation and addition to the Anne M. Pinkard building on JHU’s campus. Designed and built in the early 1990s, the Pinkard Building is a five-story facility that serves as the central learning and workspace for students and faculty. Ultimately, the University accomplished its goal of creating a hub for students that improves their connection to the medical campus and community.

Project Overview

  • The existing School of Nursing House was demolished, and a 41,000 SF, six-story addition was erected in its place
  • In addition, 29,000 SF of the existing Pinkard Building was renovated, and the un-renovated portions of the facility were occupied and remained fully operational during construction
  • New program spaces include open and enclosed study spaces for students, a café, administrative and faculty spaces, expanded conference and event space, new centers for research, and new, technology-rich learning spaces
  • Maintaining design intent, Gilbane’s preconstruction team worked with the client and architect to decrease the cost of the curtain wall by 50 percent

“In total, the value management process for The School of Nursing produced potential cost savings of almost $3 million.”
