Gilbane’s TPM delivers move management services for school’s largest academic building

The 316,000 SF facility is now considered Towson University’s largest academic structure, including 50 teaching labs, 30 research labs, 50 classrooms, an outdoor classroom, a rooftop greenhouse, and a new planetarium. Gilbane TPM was selected to provide relocation and move management services for Towson University’s new Science Complex. The TPM team had the unique opportunity of relocating a taxidermy department that included a very large bug collection, mammal collection, and bone collection. Additional safety and hazardous material containment measures were implemented during the taxidermy department moves to ensure the fragile collections were relocated safely.

Project Overview

  • Gilbane TPM served as the single point resource between the owner, movers, and specialty vendors to proficiently guide them through the relocation process including comprehensive move schedule development, vendor coordination, and onsite move management
  • The project was broken up into three individual move phases based on the academic calendar and the availability of the new spaces
  • Some of the larger, more sensitive laboratory equipment required the use of a specialty rigging and crane vendor to properly transfer it from the existing location to the new location
  • The team coordinated the decommissioning/recommissioning activities with the move vendor, specialty equipment vendor, and university staff
  • In addition, the TPM team contracted with electrical and plumbing vendors to ensure lab equipment disconnects/reconnects were handled and managed accordingly.
