New 21st Century net-zero school get high marks

Gilbane teamed up with StudioMB for this design-build modernization of a historic 1960’s elementary school in Washington, DC. The addition and renovation project spanned 73,000 SF and included a new 35,000 SF addition and a full Child Development Center (CDC). The project brings the school into the 21st century with modern spaces and sustainable features.

Project Overview

  • A new ADA-accessible entryway creates better access to the school from both sides
  • In the new two-story addition, larger specialized spaces such as the cafeteria, gym, and library are on the ground floor, with age-dependent classrooms and breakout spaces on the upper level
  • A new pedestrian bridge connects the addition to the existing school
  • Targeting LEED Gold certification, sustainable features include infrastructure for future solar panel expansion, green roofs, and a south-facing terrace on the second level.
  • 35% of contracts awarded to DC certified business enterprises (CBEs)
