Bergen County Jail Expansion and Renovation
Providing Added Value in an Urban Setting While Providing Resources for the Community
Gilbane Building Company was the construction manager for the addition and renovation of the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey. New construction included a 215,680 square foot addition consisting of inmate housing, recreation, as well as medical and administrative areas. The renovation involved 47,718 square feet of existing buildings that consisted of inmate housing, maintenance shops, kitchen, in addition to special needs units and administration areas.
The project which is in an urban setting, had infrastructure and civil engineering challenges including ground water issues such as high water table and deep foundations. Gilbane’s services included estimating, scheduling and value engineering in the preconstruction phase as well as on-site representation during construction.
A Gilbane value engineering workshop resulted in the identification of $8 million in potential project cost savings.
