Gilbane selected by The Maryland Zoo for Lion and Giraffe Savanna Exhibit and the African Elephant Exhibit

maryland zooGilbane has been awarded the renovation and expansion of several areas within the African Journey section of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, MD. This includes the expansion of the elephant barn and creation of new outdoor yards, as well as major renovations to the giraffe and lion habitats. The outdoor elephant habitat expansion will nearly triple in size to 77,330 square feet, while the indoor barn space will nearly double to 14,300 square feet; enhancing both the animal and visitor experience. Features will include:

  • A water cannon
  • Flexible elephant hay hoist
  • A more accessible boardwalk
  • Expanded stalls
  • Remote-operated hydraulic gates for transferring animals
  • new animal care team facilities
  • A new guest pathway called the African Overlook
  • Lion training demonstration viewing area
  • and more!

Construction will begin immediately and is expected to be completed by Fall 2019, with the project estimated to cost $16 million. During the renovation, The Maryland Zoo will remain open, with limited disruptions to the guest experience.
