Gilbane Building Company Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Elementary School and High School for Big Walnut Local School District
Sunbury, Ohio – May 7, 2019 – Officials from Big Walnut Local School District, Gilbane Building Company, VSWC Architects and the school community recently came together to celebrate the official groundbreaking for the new elementary school and new high school with athletic improvements.
Gilbane is serving as construction manager for the new 60,000 SF elementary school and new 305,000 SF high school with athletic improvements. The elementary facility will accommodate 500 K-4 students and includes classrooms, a STEM lab, a media center, a gym, and a dining area with a stage, a music room and other support spaces. The high school will accommodate 1,851 students and includes classrooms, academic commons, a multi-function auditorium, music, band and drama rooms, a dining commons and career education labs. Athletic improvements will include a competition gym and auxiliary gym with locker rooms, a wrestling room and an indoor elevated running track. Additional athletic facilities will include a football stadium featuring a turf field, track and concession stand facility. The site master plan also includes tennis courts, baseball and softball fields and multiple practice fields. Both buildings and the athletic facilities will be located on a 104-acre greenfield site located on the north side of Sunbury, Ohio.
