Lake Placid

“Do you believe in miracles??? YES!!!”
Al Michaels
ABC Sports at the end of the medal round ice hockey game between the US and the Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics.

Back then the Soviet Union dominated Olympic ice hockey. The United States were the underdogs with nobody expecting them to win. We went on to win the Gold Medal against Finland after the victory against the Soviet Union.  February 22nd, 2020 marked the 40th anniversary of this historic game:  “Miracle on Ice”.  Gilbane is proud to have built the arena where this historic game was held in Lake Placid.  It was one of the projects undertaken in advance of the Olympic games by Gilbane. Work began on April 21, 1977, nearly three years before the Games got underway. There were actually 14 separate projects over a 20-mile area – for housing, various arenas, ski jumps, luge run, a speed-skating rink in addition to the hockey facility, a press center – and it was all completed on time.

Confidential Medical Manufacturing Company

In 2018, a confidential medical manufacturing company was looking to overhaul their Daytona Beach, Florida manufacturing plant, and we were thrilled to be able to lead the renovation efforts, and not just because it would give us the chance to get highly advanced production lines running more smoothly; it also served a critical need: the worldwide shortage of IV bags.

Adam Verducci, Gilbane Business Leader, says there is such a shortage of IV bags in this country right now with the shifting demographics that these manufacturers can’t get to market fast enough, and that’s why we have such an aggressive schedule. The team worked long hours to help the company become commercially viable as quickly as possible.

How quickly can we get the critical systems and equipment up and running and debugged? That’s where the focus was and that’s what drives the schedule.

When we take on a project, we look at it not only from our perspective, but from a global perspective shaped by the culture that drives us. We may have started as a small company in Rhode Island, but as our national and international presence continues to expand; our family first, community first mindset has not faltered – it has and will continue to grow.

Proton Therapy Project

Baptist Health Cancer Institute Proton Therapy Facility

In 2016 Gilbane completed the construction of the new 72,350 SF concrete structure that is home to the Baptist Health Cancer Institute Proton Therapy Facility, the first center of its kind in South Florida. The center offers an entire continuum of cancer treatment options, designed to consolidate clinical services, cancer research and technology platforms. The state-of-the-art facility includes one cyclotron, three rotational gantry treatment rooms and PTEV and clinical support space. Gilbane’s advance use of technology and BIM as well as Lean construction approaches helped manage the complex nature of the project. Gilbane also managed the arrival and installation of the Cyclotron, a 220-ton piece of radiation equipment, after travelling 4,700 miles from Belgium to it’s permanent home at the Miami Cancer Institute.

“Baptist Health South Florida is dedicated to providing the best care for cancer patients, and the world-class Miami Cancer Institute will be unmatched in our region in terms of clinical excellence and advanced cancer care. It will transform cancer care in our community and across the globe,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and CEO of Baptist Health South Florida.

The mass concrete placement with intensive rough-ins included over nine miles of embedded conduit, technical gasses, medical gases and stainless steel deionized water piping.

Industry Leaders in Innovation

Using 3D Models to Improve School Safety

Gilbane’s 3D models allow all parties on a project to discuss myriad issues on the site while visualizing the mass and scale of the project in an incredibly tangible way. One of the most exciting ways we are utilizing this process is in our work with schools. Greg Sassi, our Director of Security, has developed a three-dimensional walkthrough model of a school that brings highly-effective safety features to life. We use these models to show school officials how to optimize the design and layout of their buildings to ensure their students are as safe as possible.  3D models are a great example of how we at Gilbane ensure our clients not only maximum efficiency, but safety as well, both during and after completion of our work.

Living Our Core Values on Every Jobsite

Constellation Brands

Constellation Brands, makers of the rapidly growing Corona and Modelo beer brands, are the leading beer importer in the United States. We are working to expand the Nava, Mexicali, and Obregon, Mexico breweries. Our partnership has not only helped both of our firms to prosper, but has given us the opportunity to give back to the people of Mexico.

Gilbane’s Constellation Brewery team collected money for presents for children during the Lions Club School No. 2 event in Piedras Negras Coahuila, Mexico. Several team members were on hand to distribute hundreds of gifts and brighten the holidays for these young children.

“Bristol Aggie is special place. The culture that the students and staff have created is one of innovation, curiosity, and collaboration. We’re very excited to be immersed in this culture as a partner in this extraordinary project that is an undeniable investment in the school’s future.”– Mike O’Brien, Sr. Vice President.
