Safety Culture- It’s a Journey, Not a Destination

Proactive engagement in workplace safety is crucial for uncovering hidden hazards and fostering a safe and secure working environment. We can create a culture where safety concerns are promptly addressed by fostering open communication, building trust, and empowering employees. Recognizing and rewarding employees who highlight potential risks further encourages proactive behavior.

Acting on feedback and demonstrating a commitment to safety shows employees that their insights are valued, leading to continuous improvement. Embracing curiosity through regular engagement and safety walkthroughs ensures that all perspectives are considered, ultimately enhancing workplace safety and mitigating risks.

Culture of Caring

At the heart of our core values is caring, which, along with our genuine respect for people and the communities we serve, drives our commitment to making a social and sustainable impact. Our culture of safety and well-being, ethics, and core values assure our clients and partners that we always operate with their best interests in mind.

As a five-time CISE Safety Award winner from Construction Industry Round Table, we at Gilbane know that proactive engagement is essential to fully benefit from your workforce’s safety insights. Creating a proactive safety culture where employees feel encouraged and empowered to share their observations and concerns is essential to mitigating risks and supporting everyone’s health and safety.

Here’s how to get started:
  • Foster Open Communication: Conduct regular safety meetings and suggestion boxes for anonymous reporting systems. Ensure employees know that their safety concerns are taken seriously and will be addressed promptly.
  • Build Trust: Cultivate a culture of trust where employees feel comfortable reporting potential hazards without fear of retaliation. Trust is crucial for honest and open communication about safety issues.
  • Empower Employees: Give employees the authority to stop work if they identify a safety risk. Empowered employees are more likely to take proactive measures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Recognize Contributions: Publicly acknowledge and reward employees who raise safety concerns. Recognition reinforces the importance of safety and motivates others to speak up.
  • Act on Feedback: Respond to employee feedback to demonstrate that you value it. Addressing reported hazards and implementing suggested safety improvements shows you are committed to creating a safer workplace.
  • Get Curious: Curiosity is a powerful tool in improving workplace safety. Regularly engage with employees across all levels to understand their experiences and perspectives on safety. Ask questions, conduct safety walkthroughs, and encourage employees to share their observations. This curiosity will uncover hidden safety hazards and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Leveraging your workforce’s unspoken knowledge can enhance workplace safety. By fostering open communication, building trust, empowering employees, recognizing contributions, and acting on feedback. You can uncover hidden hazards and address your blind spots. Embrace curiosity and proactively engage with your workforce to create a safer and more secure working environment.
