It is truly amazing to see the tremendous growth that’s taken place with the Next 150 Construction team. A wholly owned subsidiary of Gilbane, Next 150 Construction offers highly skilled and diverse trade labor, jobsite equipment rentals, and site consumables for Gilbane projects nationwide. This team delivers safety professionals, skilled laborers, carpenters, superintendents, equipment operators, and rentals, as well as temporary facilities and services like office trailers and storage containers, to name a few.
Operating in over 25 markets nationwide, Next 150 Construction has an ethnically and racially diverse workforce of over 52%. It is committed to providing career paths to those without traditional access to construction employment opportunities. The team strives to provide unique and challenging project assignments that allow our team members to grow personally and professionally.
This is what makes Next 150 Construction so unique. Whether it’s a new chapter after a long-heralded career or, in the case of the Torres family, a family affair that builds generational opportunity and wealth, Next 150 has become a career path for many who seek a new opportunity with lots of growth potential and a new career experience.
Here are some stories from several Next 150 Construction team members who discuss their journey and experience—just a sampling of people who make Next 150 Construction unique.
Steve Clemons, Area Foreman, Next 150 Construction
Steve Clemons is an area foreman supporting numerous projects across the Mid-Atlantic region. Steve credits his career growth in construction to the mentorship he received and the strong connections he has forged. “I feel like I went through all the steps. I started as a skilled laborer, then foreman, and assistant superintendent,” he says. “I was set on learning all I could learn in this industry. I shadowed other leaders on site, trying to learn everything I could about the construction process.
“The more you know, the more you can grow, advance, and move forward.”
Steve Clemons, Area Foreman, Next 150 Construction
Having been with Next 150 Construction for nearly six years, Steve now mentors others just starting their careers. He’s most excited to see the team’s growth and looks forward to seeing how team members expand their career paths.
Steve remembers one project that meant a lot to him, personally and professionally. He was a DC Public Schools John Lewis Elementary School project superintendent. During construction, an artist was painting intricate murals throughout the school. Steve approached the artist to explain his son’s strong passion for art. The artist welcomed Steve’s son to the site and taught him how to paint, even letting him try a couple of brush strokes on a large mural. Steven couldn’t have imagined this moment and was so proud to see the excitement on his son’s face. A memory that will last a lifetime.
Gerry Torres, Laborer Foreman, Next 150 Construction
Gerry Torres, a laborer foreman in New England, has been with the company for nearly 13 years. His family has a strong connection to the construction industry and to Next 150 Construction. His brothers, Rudy and Pablo, his wife, Blanca, and his son, Andy, worked for the company. Each family member loves what they do and appreciates the company’s commitment to quality work, safety, and a supportive, caring culture. They also appreciate a “good day’s pay for a job well done.”
He says, “It’s so nice to have family around you, people who know you so well, to share experiences and support one another. It’s wonderful to see the project you’ve been working on for many months, and sometimes years, take shape; it makes me feel so proud. That’s how I felt when we completed 225 Wyman Street and then months later, seeing people using the building, that’s really a great feeling.”
When asked about one experience he remembers most fondly over the years; he recalls a Gilbane project engineer who treated him to a birthday lunch—a small act of kindness that left a lasting impact. He continues to pay it forward to his family, his colleagues at Next 150 Construction, and the Gilbane project teams that are fortunate enough to have Gerry on their team.
Mario Traficanti, Laborer Foreman, Next 150 Construction
Having grown up around the industry, Mario Traficanti knew he was interested in a career in construction at an early age. His stepfather owned a small residential roofing company, and Mario would spend his summers working alongside these skilled workers. Mario, a laborer foreman in Indianapolis, first started with Gilbane Building Company as an intern and progressed into a full-time project engineer before transitioning into his current position with Next 150 Construction.
Mario is excited to be a part of the Next 150 Construction team and sees the true potential and opportunities for career growth within the organization. “With Next 150 Construction, we have an opportunity to bring awareness around all the potential career paths available within the trades,” he says. “It’s inspiring work. We get to mentor and support others in building their careers and know that they will receive great pay and benefits for themselves and their families.
Mario has learned a lot about the various roles in construction from the Gilbane Building Company side and Next 150 Construction. One thing remains consistent across those companies: “Next 150 Construction takes care of its people, and so does Gilbane. We have a caring relationship with each team member, where everyone is inspired, respected, and appreciated. Gilbane Cares is true.”
