Inspiring Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Innovator of the Year Award

April 13, 2021
Gloria Harville
This is an exciting time for the construction industry – technology opportunities are vast, and innovation abounds. As part of Gilbane’s continued pursuit of innovation and advanced technology, our Innovation Council held its annual company-wide competition designed to highlight employee-led innovations, push forward new ideas, and celebrate the ingenuity, creativity, and entrepreneurship that exists in every corner of our company.

The internal awards program features new products, programs, and solutions that embody Gilbane’s core value of entrepreneurship and contribute to Gilbane’s ongoing shift to integrated technology. Employees across the company are encouraged to pitch an idea that are driving innovation in either support operations or project operations. The ideas can be new, in early planning stages, or already in existence. This year, the Innovation Council received over 50 nominations. The nominations were narrowed down to six finalists, and employees were given the opportunity to vote for their top three choices. The top three ideas were then presented to Gilbane’s executive leadership team and President and CEO, Mike McKelvy, for the chance to win the prestigious President’s Award.

The Innovator of the Year Award Program is a great opportunity to celebrate creativity, share fresh solutions, and cultivate forward thinking by allowing employees to become part of the innovation conversation and collaboratively build on one another’s ideas. Gilbane aims to further strengthen connections and create cross-dialogue between employees and departments to enhance engagement and collaboratively reach approaches and solutions beyond what can be imagined.

Meet our Top Three Innovators:

Breaking Down Information Silos
New York City Business Unit

The New York City business unit initiated a Quarterly Business Review (QBR) process in early 2020 to break down information silos across projects and support operations, identify and share trends, concerns, and market sector plans.

Using AI to Continuously Innovate
New York City Business Unit

Gilbane partnered with Disperse, a leading provider of building productivity systems to identify problems before they compound. Disperse takes construction site data — and using AI and machine-learning— digitizes and processes that data, taking the visual documentation to a whole new level.

Virtual Site Tours with 3DVista
Southeast Division

The Southeast team discovered an immersive way to bring teams together on the jobsite while limiting in-person site visits and integrating additional teaching and learning resources with the help of 3DVista, drones and 360° cameras. The team found a tool that creates virtual tours with embedded wayfinding, drawing integration, 360° photo and drone footage integration.

And the Winner Goes to….

After careful evaluation and consideration, Gilbane’s leadership team awarded the New York Division, Using AI to Continuously Innovate, the 2020 President’s Awards. We value the ideas shared by all this year’s participants and look forward to the new innovative ideas 2021 will bring.
