Raising the Bar for Healthcare Clients

August 21, 2018

A key to Gilbane’s healthcare project success is leveraging the expertise of the National Healthcare Construction Alliance throughout the design and construction phases to address the unique challenges of this growing market. Vice President and Healthcare Leader for Gilbane Building Company Brian Garbecki details his thoughts on critical success factors below.

Aging baby boomers that continue to drive growth in healthcare services coupled with increased consumerism, a sharpened focus on cost reduction strategies, and uncertainty over the future of our healthcare system, are all contributing factors to the steady gain in increased and varied healthcare facility types. Seeing this, Gilbane Building Company launched a National Healthcare Construction Alliance to address the challenges of our clients within this growing market, providing a dedicated group who understand the needs and goals of our clients.

Gilbane’s National Healthcare Construction Alliance is comprised of 20 of Gilbane’s most seasoned healthcare professionals, several of whom have formerly worked in healthcare organizations, including executives, estimators, field staff and transition planning and management experts. This centralized group gathers and shares construction best practices and knowledge on:

  • current trends
  • sustainable design
  • construction solutions
  • equipment
  • technology
  • operational issues
  • cost and schedule reduction
  • speed to market and vendor specific to the unique requirements of the market

Ensuring Project Success
Keeping client needs in mind is critical in healthcare projects and the success of any project depends on three key dynamics:

  • The patient always comes first
  • The established budget and schedule MUST be met
  • Zero disruption to ongoing operations

Our alliance members have developed tools and processes to address these critical success factors. Cost Advisor and Advanced Planning and Scheduling enable our team to develop accurate and achievable budgets and schedules at the outset of a project and share this data across projects to continually benchmark information. The implementation of our web-based Infection Control and Interim Life Safety plan monitoring process focuses on patient safety first. Proactive project work plans and communication with hospital staff ensure there are no surprises when work is being executed, so there is no impact to ongoing clinical operations.

It is critical to collaborate with clients to ensure added value through identifying and implementing leading-edge healthcare developments, and share the philosophy of client advocacy–from Lean project delivery to innovative cost modeling methods and sophisticated technology solutions.

Seamless delivery
Speed to market is key for clinical service line and revenue generation and there are several best practices that clients can implement  to achieve that success.

With the critical requirement to obtain all the accreditation and regulatory approvals needed from local and national health care authorities before facilities can be opened to treat patients, an experienced team who can navigate these complex regulatory processes allows a client to focus on what matters most – patient care.
