Giving Back with Impact – 3 Ways to Engage Community Partners in a Shared Mission

At Gilbane, our core values are at the heart of everything we do and influence how we build projects, connect with partners, and interact with the community. Building More Than Buildings® encompasses a commitment to living out our core values each day. It is more than a catchy tagline that we use in our marketing materials. It reflects our daily commitment to leave a lasting impact on the local communities where we live and work.

Giving back is intrinsic to Gilbane’s mission of Building More Than Buildings®, and we know that we can’t achieve this mission alone. We must go beyond the physical spaces that we build to connect with the people who interact with those spaces daily. We can make an even more significant impact when we partner with clients, organizations, and individuals who align with our mission.

Finding Shared Vision in Client Relationships

Project success is more than the physical building or a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the end of a job. True partnership is about understanding what drives and motivates our clients. It starts with aligning core values and finding a shared purpose to ultimately create impact throughout the life of the project and beyond. Gilbane takes tremendous pride in partnering with our K-12 clients and leveraging the project as an opportunity for teaching and learning. As an example, Gilbane hosted a student inclusion day with the East Prairie School District 73. During the event, students learned about the design and construction industry and were able to see their new school through the magic of virtual reality. It was inspiring to see the excitement on their faces as they experienced their new school in such a unique way.

Teaming Up with Industry Partners

Gilbane is continually finding organizations that share our same goal of positively impacting the community. A great example of this shared vision is our engagement with CREW Chicago through the annual CREW Careers mentoring program. Partnering with Off the Street Club, we introduce middle and high school girls to the world of commercial real estate through project tours, hands-on learning, guest speakers and group projects. We have learned so much from our students as they have from the mentors. Having industry leaders from all facets of the commercial real estate industry come together for the common good is powerful and helps accelerate opportunity and exposure.

Leveraging Employee Involvement

Another opportunity for engagement is by partnering with your employees. A great way to provide an inclusive environment is to tap into shared values and support organizations and causes that are important to your employees. Horizons for Youth is an organization that is near and dear to my heart. Gilbane continually encourages my involvement with HFY by supporting me as a student mentor, providing students with career exploration and educational opportunities, and contributing to their mission through our charity golf tournament. Working for a company that aligns with my core values and passions inspires me to bring my best self to work each day.

By partnering with our clients, industry partners, and employees, we believe we can create more impactful experiences for the local community and build lasting relationships that will stand the test of time.
