Gilbane Young Professionals: Creating Meaningful Impact

July 14, 2020

As part of Gilbane’s Employee Resource Group (ERG) Ally Series, the Gilbane Young Professionals (GYP) ERG offers insight on becoming an ally for other ERGs as they cultivate their knowledge, experience and values to grow and build capacity for Gilbane, our industry and our communities.

We care. Unlike our other ERGs, the GYP is defined by a stage in our careers. We target employees entering the construction industry and at the beginning of their professional career. The GYP was created to support the development of these employees and enhance their experience at Gilbane. Our mission is to engage, provide a community and give a voice this set of employees. That voice is diverse by nature. Thanks to Gilbane’s focus on inclusion and diversity strategies that help recruit and retain diverse talent, the GYP has evolved into a snapshot of how diverse the company is becoming as we continue to promote inclusion.

We ally. The GYP is made up of members and allies from all of Gilbane’s ERGs, including UJIMA, Pride, HOL@, empoWer and Military Advantage. Their missions are our mission. Their voice is our voice. “We take cues from our other ERGs to aid in the development of our young professionals,” said Ryan Hutchins, executive vice president and GYP executive sponsor, “The GYP tailors our personal and professional development programs, as well as our social and charitable events to foster an inclusive community for all our members.” The GYP hosts events and champions initiatives that focus on the needs of our young professionals including:

  1. Personal Development – These programs highlight varying topics such as health and financial wellness. For example, we’ve hosted speakers from Fidelity to discuss Gilbane’s 401k benefits and actions GYP members and allies can take to set themselves up for financial success.
  2. Professional Development – The GYP focuses on setting our members up for successful careers. Organizations like Graceworks have helped our members and allies fine tune their presentation skills and improve their confidence.
  3. Charitable Giving – To us it’s about building more than buildings. We work with charities that are meaningful to our members such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Tampa Bay Watch and Toys for Tots.
  4. Social Engagement – Social events like virtual happy hours help our members connect with one another — creating a sense of community and family at Gilbane.

We unite. “The role of the GYP is to attract, develop, and retain emerging professionals at Gilbane by providing an outlet for professional and personal development,” explained Gilbane’s Lean practices specialist and chair of the GYP ERG. “It’s important for us to harness the skills and enthusiasm of young professionals in order to effect change and contribute meaningfully, not only to Gilbane, but to our communities. That’s why we are uniting with leadership and partnering with ERGs to create opportunities to gather, network and encourage diverse thinking and backgrounds.” Young professionals play a significant role in championing initiatives that will impact not only their generation, but future generations.

Our next Gilbane Ink blog in the ERG Ally Series will be published on Tuesday, July 21 featuring insights from empoWer: empowering individuals to deliver a global platform which connects, attracts, and inspires women to thrive and excel in their personal and professional lives.
