Building Careers – Retaining, Attracting, and Growing a Diversified Workforce

Workforce diversity is a fast-growing movement and with good reason. Diversity recruiting provides tangible benefits for performance, creativity, and innovation – including a more varied candidate pool, broader range of skill sets and experiences, and increased cultural awareness. Recruiters and talent acquisition leaders are playing an important role in developing systems and procedures that support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

As a proud builder, Gilbane also understands the importance of developing and building our people and reflecting the communities in which they work and live in. We firmly believe that a diverse workforce enriches every aspect of life at Gilbane. Building a diverse workplace that fosters inclusion is important at Gilbane and we are also taking actionable steps to engage, assess, and hire diverse talent:

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Our ERGs support and promote a workplace culture in which all our employees feel included, appreciated, and heard. While each ERG has a specific mission and targeted demographic, employees are strongly encouraged to join any group as an ally. We strive to be an industry leader in promoting a workforce enriched with employees of all backgrounds and perspectives.

Inclusive Employee Benefits: We recognize the importance of balancing work and family and believe in a holistic approach in providing benefits for each employee so that they can bring their best selves to work each day. Gilbane’s benefits support families of all shapes and sizes, and include adoption assistance, paid family leave, comprehensive support for financial, mental and emotional wellbeing, pet insurance, 401k, and more.

Comprehensive Job Descriptions: We review our job descriptions to mitigate biases, and ensure the criteria set is clear and reflects the skills and competencies needed to do the job.

Widening the Search: We are partnering with firms to ensure job postings are shared across a wide spectrum of job boards and groups.

Unconscious Bias in Recruitment and Selection Training: We continue to explore learning opportunities for recruiters and managers that provide a comprehensive understanding of types of unconscious biases and their impact on the recruitment process. We aim to provide practical tools needed to design selection criteria that is fair and clear.

A diverse workforce (in terms of skills, experiences, age, gender, race, nationality, religion, disabilities, and sexual orientation) brings diverse viewpoints and perspectives that are invaluable to developing new approaches to serve our customers, employees, and communities. At Gilbane, we continue to evolve our diversity recruiting initiatives and aim to foster a culture where inclusion is embedded into everyday interactions now and for the next 150 years.
