$13.5M Investment in North Buffalo To Add Engineered Space, Production Capacity, High-Paying Jobs to Existing Surmet Queen City Operation

width=Buffalo, New York – Surmet Corp. and Gilbane Building Company were joined today by local elected officials for a ground-breaking celebration at Surmet’s North Buffalo Facility that will further their joint commitment to the city’s ongoing redevelopment and growth.

The $13.5 million investment in Surmet’s facility at 699 Hertel Ave. will include renovation of an existing 75,000-square-foot building and the addition of specially-engineered space to house new production furnaces and custom-built ceramics processing equipment that will be the largest of its kind in the nation.

Once completed, this expansion will provide Surmet with vertically integrated capability to manufacture transparent ceramic products and add high-paying professional engineering and production jobs that will contribute to Buffalo’s ongoing economic revitalization.

“Gilbane is proud to be playing a role in the rebirth and modernization of Buffalo’s long-standing manufacturing sector,” said John K.S. Cleary, senior project executive and head of Gilbane’s Buffalo office. “Working with Surmet on this cutting-edge project will enable us to deepen our commitment to the city, and the Western New York region as a whole. Big things are happening in Buffalo, and we are thrilled to be a part of this important undertaking.”

Surmet has been in this Buffalo facility since 2002. The Gilbane-managed construction project is expected to be completed in February 2022.
