Gilbane Columbus Team Builds More than Buildings with Local Columbus Community
“Community engagement is an integral part of Gilbane’s culture,” said Savannah Anderson, Gilbane’s HR business partner in Columbus. “It directly aligns with our ESG efforts locally and exemplifies many of our core values, including teamwork, dedication to excellence, and caring. Our involvement with the local community is part of how we can uphold our commitment to building safer and more inclusive communities for future generations.”
The team kicked off National Volunteer Month with three events in April held at the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, Columbus Humane Society, and United Methodist Church’s Free Store.
- The Mid-Ohio Food Collective is Ohio’s largest food bank, serving 20 counties in a 10,000-square-mile area. Gilbane volunteers assisted with curbside pickup and worked in registration, loading, and food services.
- The United Methodist Church and Community Development for All People operate a free store, providing families with gently used clothing and household items. Since its opening day in January of 1999, the Free Store has had its membership grow to over 50,000 families in Central Ohio. Gilbane volunteers sorted through recent donations.
- The last event was held at the Columbus Humane Society, an organization established in 1883 to fight animal cruelty by advocating for animal well-being. Gilbane assisted the shelter by spending quality time with dogs and making treats.
In May, the team continued their efforts by building a playhouse as part of the fourth annual Playhouse Project Blitz Build hosted by Habitat for Humanity MidOhio. Since the start of the program, over $600,000 and over 188 playhouses have been built for more than 425 children. Event sponsors are assigned a local family and design a playhouse to fit their interests. Our Gilbane team assembled, painted, and decorated a playhouse to create a one-of-a-kind play space with a garden and technology theme. Families arrived at the end of the day for a playhouse reveal and to meet the volunteer builders.
