Gilbane Celebrates Topping Out of DeKalb County School District Sequoyah Middle and High School
Topping out milestone marks structural progress for the new Sequoyah Middle and High School campus
Doraville, Georgia – May 8, 2026 — Gilbane, a leading global builder in K‑12 construction, joined DeKalb County School District (DCSD), GMC Architects, HPM, DLR Group, and community members to celebrate the topping out of the new Sequoyah Middle School and High School campus on April 17, 2026. More than 350 partners, students, and guests attended the ceremony, signing the final beam to commemorate their participation and collective achievement.
The topping out marks significant progress on DCSD’s long-term investment in modern, future‑ready learning environments and celebrates the structural progress of a complex joint‑use campus. To date, the project includes the installation of approximately 1,900 tons of structural steel, 180 tons of steel joists, and approximately 485,000 square feet of metal decking across 32 carefully coordinated erection sequences. Gilbane recognizes Steel, LLC and Superior Rigging & Erecting for their exceptional workmanship and leadership in achieving this milestone.
“Our team is focused on delivering a facility that meets the district’s goals and enhances the student learning experience,” said Brian Steed, Vice President and Georgia/South Carolina Business Leader, Gilbane Building. “This milestone reflects the meaningful impact that can be made when construction aligns with educational purpose. We’re proud to partner with DeKalb County School District to bring the vision for Sequoyah Middle and High School to life.”
The project includes a new five‑story high school, four‑story middle school, gymnasium center, and a performing arts center (PAC) on a shared campus. Program elements feature classrooms, media centers, fine arts spaces, an auditorium, kitchens and cafeterias, a gymnasium with an indoor track, special education classrooms, career and technical education labs, administrative offices, and building support spaces. The campus will also include extensive outdoor athletic facilities such as a new practice field with artificial turf and a rubberized track, football and soccer field, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, and parking areas.
Once complete, the new Sequoyah Middle and High School campus will provide enhanced educational spaces designed to support 21st‑century learning, improved safety, and long‑term growth for DeKalb County School District. The project supports DCSD’s commitment to providing equitable, high-quality educational environments that serve students, families, and the broader community.
