Columbus, Ohio – May 24, 2024 – Gilbane Building Company is pleased to announce that Joel Vande Boom has been named Special Projects Group (SPG) Market Leader in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and Michigan. In this new role, Joel will continue to elevate the SPG teams in the region and focus on executing a business strategy that aligns with the company’s future growth in the area.

Since the inception of SPG in 2016, Joel has grown the SPG team from one to a team of 50+ diverse and multidisciplinary professionals across the Midwest. The team has worked for 35 clients, 20 of which have ongoing continuous work. Joel has also been instrumental in leading Gilbane’s internal SPG group and establishing Gilbane’s brand as a multi-site program builder nationwide. Gilbane’s SPG national client accounts have reached over 30 states with many roll-out, multi-site programs taking place simultaneously.

“Since joining Gilbane eight years ago, Joel has created and nurtured the SPG portfolio into a significant component of our overall business in the Midwest,” said Brett Meyer, senior vice president at Gilbane Building Company. “I am so proud of Joel’s accomplishments and leadership, and I congratulate him on a well-deserved promotion.”

“I’m very grateful to continue problem-solving for our current and new clients and develop our SPG team,” said Joel Vande Boom. “With real estate portfolios changing and challenges with space utilization, this work provides a great alignment for our team to showcase their talents. I’m excited about the future of SPG in the Midwest and across the country, and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to lead this group of incredible Gilbane team members.”

Joel is a passionate and dedicated leader who has created an innovative business model that increases efficiency through analytics and speed-to-market. Through Joel’s commitment to developing SPG teams, his engagement in industry and non-industry organizations, and his dedication to employee engagement, he inspires, motivates, and brings the best out of people, which leads to his common goal – success for all. In 2021, Joel was named to Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Midwest Top Young Professionals. Additionally, he was recognized by ENR at the national level for their 2021 Top 20 Under 40 award.

Joel earned a dual Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering (structural engineering) and construction management with a minor in financial management from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 2010. He was also a two-time academic All-American athlete and was inducted into the MSOE Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation, Joel started his career at M. A. Mortenson Construction, advancing from project engineer to project manager while working on over $750 million in projects in numerous states. He then joined Gilbane in 2016 as a project manager and quickly grew to senior project manager overseeing the SPG team.

Joel’s passion continues forward in his desire to give back. He is a youth baseball, wrestling, and flag football coach and serves on the board as treasurer of the Russ Hellickson Central Ohio Youth Wrestling League.  He works with organizations like Delay the Disease, Big and Loud (Parkinson Program), and Alzheimer Events through Total Care Therapy.
