width=Elected officials from the City of Cranston joined the Cranston Public School community and representatives from JACOBS Engineering, Finegold Alexander Architects, and Gilbane Building Company to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new 105,000-SF Gladstone Elementary School.

The new school is one of five core building projects identified in Cranston’s five-year facility improvement plan approved by RIDE SBA for Housing Aid State Reimbursement. Once complete, the new Gladstone Elementary, at almost 40,000 SF larger than the existing school will accommodate 798 students and include the existing student population from Arlington Elementary.

Gladstone Elementary will provide students with a 21st Century learning environment that addresses current educational program requirements for grades K-5 while also meeting or exceeding present sustainability and energy codes. Features include a combination of learning and community engagement areas, such as a cafeteria and a gymnasium with performance space. There are also designated special education classrooms, administration areas, a nurse’s office, and food preparation space.

A combination of sub-surface and surface stormwater infiltration systems will be incorporated into the scope, and the project will be NE-CHPS compliant and designed to meet all sustainability requirements.

“We’re thrilled to be part of the team, and the Cranston community, as we deliver this exceptional new facility to the district’s youngest learners,” said Steve Duvel, senior vice president and division leader for Gilbane in New England. “Gilbane is inspired by Cranston’s dedication to education and its students, and we remain a proud partner in this next phase of their ongoing improvement plan.”

The existing elementary school will be demolished as part of the project scope. During construction, students will be relocated to a temporary school location in Cranston.

Gladstone Elementary is slated for completion by 2025.
