Top Reasons I’m Excited about Gilbane’s 2023 Outlook

January 10, 2023
Tom Laird
The start of a new year is a time of both reflection and looking forward. As I begin my second year leading Gilbane Building Company, I am reflecting on our tremendous, recent accomplishments as a company and the growth opportunities we can expect in 2023. As we look forward to a new year partnering with our clients to deliver excellent outcomes, I wanted to share some of the many reasons, I’m excited for another successful year at Gilbane.

1. Our High-Performing Teams

As one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated construction management companies, the skills and experience of our people top this list of reasons I’m looking forward to a strong 2023.  We continue to invest in our teams through industry-leading training programs and we are seeking talent at all levels to deepen our teams. Gilbane leads the industry with best-in-class builders who are deeply committed to excellence.  And we’ll continue to open up job roles for those teams as our diverse portfolio yields new professional challenges and opportunities. If you’re interested in starting a career in construction or looking to help build some of the most exciting and transformational building projects, you can explore our current opportunities here.

2. Record Backlog

As we have for several years, Gilbane will start 2023 with a record backlog of projects in diverse, growing, and emerging market sectors across the country and around the globe. We will be breaking ground on some of the most game-changing and exciting projects representative of many industries – from food and beverage to hospitals and corporate headquarters to K-12 schools and much more.  In 2023, we will continue to leverage our partnership with Gilbane Development Company around public private partnerships (P3s) and design-build delivery. We are thrilled to partner with so many exceptional repeat and new clients to fulfill the vision of their projects.

3. The Power of One Gilbane

Vertical integration between our construction management-focused Gilbane Building Company and the Gilbane Development Company positions us to deliver on a range of public private partnerships (P3s) in 2023.  P3 projects are tremendously powerful force multipliers for communities across the U.S.  Take Maryland’s Prince George’s County schools P3 project, for example.  Gilbane companies are working to design, build, finance and maintain six public schools for 8,000 students to address rapid student enrollment growth amid aging school buildings.

4. Advancing our ESG Commitments
In 2022, Gilbane committed to generate $4 billion in awards over five years to certified minority and women-owned businesses (M/WBE), disadvantaged, LGBTBE, and veteran-businesses enterprises, as part of a comprehensive economic inclusion strategy. In 2023, we’ll report our progress on that commitment as we continue to build a better future for our entire Gilbane family of employees, for the communities in which we live and work and beyond, and for the generations to come. Through an integrated environmental, social, and governance platform that leverages Gilbane’s resources, we challenge ourselves to continuously examine and improve our opportunity for impact.

5. Transformational Projects of All Sizes
We are building some of the most exciting and high profile projects across the country like the nation’s largest healthcare project — Indiana University Health New Downtown Hospital in Indianapolis, an historic expansion of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond,  and the Buffalo Bills’ new NFL stadium.  And projects don’t have to be large to have an exciting and meaningful impact.  In 2022, we broke ground on the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) A-Block. The 25,000 SF renovation will restore a major section of the institution, housing its well-known School of Film/Video.  After a flood, CalArts is taking the opportunity to not only rebuild what they lost, but to expand. The space will include multiple improvements, including upgrading mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as expanding the footprint of the school.

6. Our Core Values
There’s a sixth reason that carries through our 150-year-plus history as family-owned company.  It’s our stability which is built on our core values.  In the face of some of the most difficult moments and pressing challenges  — a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, we’ve never strayed from our commitment to our core values. The core value I cherish most is Caring which drives every aspect of our business and how we interact with our people, our partners, our clients, and our communities. During my over 30-year career with Gilbane, I have been privileged to work with some of the most caring and passionate people I have ever met. I know that will carry through 2023 and beyond.
