Tokyo, Japan

Gilbane’s experience in Japan spans over 10 years.  Our teams are building projects for the U.S. Federal Government and have rapid response capabilities for critical infrastructure projects.

Gilbane’s team of construction professionals in Tokyo manages integrated operations for federal government construction, environmental services and fueling facility services for clients including the Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC), Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), and the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (NFESC). Gilbane’s volume of work in multiple locations in Japan over the past ten years has helped us to establish long-term partnerships with local subcontractors, architects and engineers.

The Gilbane team in Japan is proud of their accomplishments and involvement on these representative projects:

  • Renovate Hospital Building 4408, 1st and 4th Floors, Yokota Air Base, Japan: Gilbane provided construction services to renovate and repair the first and fourth floors and perform seismic upgrades on the 2nd and 3rd floors in this active hospital. The team performed hazardous material abatement, demolition, structural upgrades, architectural finishes, MEP infrastructure, finish trim, and fire suppression across 15 distinct phases to avoid adverse effects to ongoing patient care.
  • Hospital Electrical Modernization, Yokota Air Base, Japan: Gilbane provided design-build services for electrical modernization and repairs at multiple medical centers located at Yokota Air Base. The team’s design for the update and restoration of the 6,600-volt electrical service and emergency power system improved service reliability of service for the healthcare facility, yielded greater efficiencies, and reduced costs.
  • Renovation of Dormitory Facility, Misawa Air Base, Japan: Gilbane completed extensive renovations and repairs to the existing Dorm 672 Building at Misawa Air Base to extend the life of the four-story, 62,500-square foot facility. Repairs included removal and replacement of windows, doors, interior walls, HVAC systems/ductwork, and lighting/panelboard wiring, as well as treatment of mold-impacted areas and installation of a code-compliant fire protection system.
  • Inspect and Repair Tanks, Misawa Air Base, Japan: Gilbane is performing bulk fuel tank inspections and repair services for five fuel tanks ranging from 210,000 to 4.2 million gallons. The project includes pre-programmed repair items and additional repairs that may be discovered during the inspections.
  • Repair Circuit Breakers, East Substation Yokota Air Base, Japan: Gilbane replaced two 66 kV vacuum circuit breakers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) circuit breakers. We removed the existing 66kV vacuum circuit breakers, associated control systems, equipment and devices, disconnect switches, current transformers, lightning arresters, raceways with mounting supports, equipment foundations, and metering equipment.

The Gilbane team supports the Tokyo orphanage, Seibi Children’s Home in Tokyo.  The orphanage is in dire need of resources to build appropriate housing for the children. Seoul, South Korea

Gilbane is very active on several U.S. military bases in the Republic of Korea and has established relationships with qualified Korean-based subcontractors and design firms.

Gilbane construction operations in South Korea serves clients including the Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).  As a U.S. Federal Government Prime Contractor, our reputation for integrity has allowed Gilbane to establish excellent business relationships with experienced Korean subcontractors and design firms currently working on the U.S. military bases in the Republic of Korea (ROK) including:

Our team is performing repairs and upgrades of DLA facilities as a prime contractor of to the Air Force Civil Engineers Center (AFCEC).  Additional representative projects include:

  • Various Repairs at POL Facilities, Osan Air Base, Korea: Gilbane performed  repairs to POL facilities across the base, including access road repairs for refueler trucks and emergency vehicles, valve pits and concrete containment repairs, oil/water separator replacements, and military service station repairs.
  • Hospital Electrical System Repairs, Osan Air Base, Korea: Gilbane provided design-build services for repairs of the EEES in the Osan AB Hospital (Building 777). The Base is located approximately 50 miles from the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea, which is the most heavily militarized border in the world. Due to the Base location within a potential war zone, the Base hospital maintains war readiness at all times.
  • Story Range Clearance/Demining, Republic of Korea: Gilbane conducted UXO clearance and mine removal activities on 57 acres at Story Range, within 5 miles of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), to support future construction activities in a former battlefield area.  A total of 812 land mines were detonated during the clearance activities.  Gilbane developed a GIS system to track the location of items encountered and the status of clearance and QC/QA efforts on each grid.  The GIS system was web-enabled to allow all stakeholders to review daily progress.
  • Clean, Inspect, Repair 13 Fuel Tanks at Kunsan Air Base, Suwon Air Base, and K-16 Air Base, Republic of Korea: Gilbane has recently begun inspecting and repairing five bulk fuel storage tanks at these three facilities under our SATOC IDIQ contract. The extent of repairs will be determined after cleaning and inspecting is finished.

  • Japan Tsunami Emergency Pipeline Repairs, DFSP Hachinohe, Japan
    Gilbane fuels specialists were immediately mobilized when the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was devastated by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami to inspect and repair damaged fuel pipelines.
  • Bob Hope/Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan: Gilbane has begun construction of a new elementary school for Kadena Air Base.
  • Perform Soil Erosion Repairs, Kadena Air Base, Japan
    Gilbane is repairing eroded soil areas around underground bulk fuel storage tanks. The soil areas cover and protect large, multi-million-gallon fuel tanks.
  • Pipeline In-Line Instrumented Pigging and Repairs, 505th Quartermaster Battalion, Okinawa, Japan
    Gilbane performed in-line inspections combined with a series of pipeline cleaning and inspection pigs. Each pipeline was cleaned with a series of progressively more assertive cleaning pigs (e.g., foam, scraping, brushed, and magnetic.) prior to inspection.

Multiple Projects in Afghanistan

Gilbane Federal constructed major infrastructure and critical facilities totaling more than $180 million in Kabul, Afghanistan.

A dedicated and internationally diverse team of U.S. employees, third-country nationals (TCNs) and local Afghanis use their combined expertise to support multiple projects delivered under contract vehicles such as Heavy Engineering Renovation and Construction (HERC), (Sustainment, Repair and Modernization (SRM) Acquisition and Task Order Contract) SATOC, Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC), Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan (CSTC-A) and Combined Joint-Engineering (CJ-ENG) functions from the Program Management Office (PMO). Representative projects that our brave construction teams have worked on involved putting more than $180 million worth of construction in place and include:

  • Pol-E Charki Prison Facility
  • South Kabul Afghanistan International Airport (SKAIA): Design-build of new facilities, site improvements, force protection measures, utilities, and other infrastructure for the AMA Ground Forces Command, Garrison Support Unit, and Army Support Command to support 1,600 personnel.
  • Ministry of Defense Headquarters and Garrison
  • Camp Commando Phase 4 Facility and Infrastructure Upgrades (R175), Rish Kor, Kabul Province: Design-build services for renovation, demolition, and new construction at Camp Commando located approximately 18 kilometers southwest of Kabul City.  The project involved electrical distribution and central power generation plant improvements, potable water and sanitary sewer infrastructure upgrades, and modifications to the existing entry control point.
  • ANCOP Battalion Nahr-E-Saraj, Helmand Province: Design-build services for buildings, utilities, roads, force protection measures, site security, and demining activities for the ANCOP Patrol Battalion comprised of 500 personnel, an Afghan Police (ANP) organization.

County Leitrim, Ireland

Our Irish Heritage –

Gilbane is a company steeped in family values and a heritage that began in the rugged countryside of County Leitrim Ireland.  In 1842 William Gilbane was born to Thomas and Bridget (O’Brien) Gilbane. To escape the “Great Hunger” the family relocated to the United States in 1845 making Rhode Island their home and welcoming the birth of their second son, Thomas, in 1854. Together they became carpenters and worked tirelessly to found Gilbane Building Company in 1873.  Today Gilbane is building an innovative project in Naas, Ireland and utilizing lean, safe processes to add value for our client, Kerry Group Services International, Ltd.

A First of its Kind in Ireland Construction

The Global Technology and Innovation Centre for the Kerry Group is located on a 13 hectare site in the Millennium Business Park, Naas, Co. Kildare. Utilizing a targeted cost model to align design and integrated project delivery is key to this program. Strong Gilbane leadership and the ability to leverage local relationships have resulted in a very positive response in the construction community resulting in the delivery
