The opportunity

Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BD & Co.) wanted to accommodate continuing growth at its BD Technologies operation, the company's RTP hub for research and development that currently employs about 220 workers. Other functions, including human resources, finance and IT, also have a presence in the 120,000-square-foot facility.

The solution

Acting as CM-Agency, Gilbane worked on the 15-month phased renovation totaling 30,000 square feet of laboratories and administrative space, while occupied. This 16,000 square-foot addition to an existing data center provided the main computer data center for BD&Co.'s worldwide research operations.

The building combined the 7x24 operating capacity of the data center on the first floor with flexible IT support space on the second. Because the location of the data center and its support equipment was in a very visually and environmentally sensitive area of the RTP site, a collaborative and integrated design approach resulted in cost effective design solutions.

The corrugated metal panels of the building envelope and the red accent panels echo the color palette of the original building, and provide functional screening of security and mechanical equipment areas.
